RIO LINDA, CA (MPG) – Since the inception of Rio Linda and neighboring Elverta, the rural, sub-urban community has been part of the greater Sacramento County. Over the years, the idea of establishing Rio Linda as its own city has been a conversation among its residents, mostly with the motivation of preventing “predatory annexation” by the City of Sacramento.

Currently, Sacramento County services the area along with the Rio Linda Elverta Parks and Recreation District.

The conversation is resurfacing with the announcement of a meeting by District 4 Supervisor Rosario Rodriguez titled, “What Would Incorporation mean for Rio Linda Elverta?” set to take place from 5 to 6 p.m. April 9 at the Rio Linda Teen Center, 627 L St.

The event encourages public input on whether Rio Linda should remain an unincorporated part of Sacramento County, or if steps should be taken for Rio Linda and neighboring Elverta to become their own city. Discussion topics will include local representation and public resources, questions from residents and what city formation would involve, according to a flyer from the office of Rosario Rodriguez.

The journey to cityhood would be an extensive process, and now is residents’ time to weigh in on if they believe it would be worth it. Pros of becoming a city might include having more direct access to state and federal funding, having a more localized government and not relying on Sacramento County for decision making, maintenance and code enforcement.

However, some residents may feel hesitant to incorporate due to the potential increase in local taxes and fees. Residents are encouraged to explore these possible benefits and downsides, and to ask questions at the community event. All voices are welcome and encouraged.
