RIO LINDA, CA (MPG) - A roll of the dice will help turn the page for young readers when the Rio Linda Lions Club hosts its annual Bunco for Books fundraiser on Feb. 7.
The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Rio Linda Grange, 1315 G St. and benefits the Lions Club’s Third Grade Reading Program, which provides grade-level books to every third-grade student in local schools. The $25 buy-in supports the purchase of books for students and an additional dozen books for each participating classroom. A no-host bar will be available.
Now in its fourth year, Bunco for Books has become a lighthearted community favorite that combines friendly competition with a serious mission.
“The Lions Club of Rio Linda have had a newer fundraiser the last four years for our Third Grade Reading Program,” said Gene Kypke, a Lions Club member. “It is called Bunco for Books. It ties in with Reading Across America.”
Most years, the event features a “Cat in the Hat” theme in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2. Kypke said the whimsical approach helps keep the focus on fun while highlighting the importance of literacy.
“We raise revenue to help cover some of the costs to purchase reading grade-level books for every one of our third-grade students in all of our local schools, plus about an additional dozen books for each classroom,” he said. “Getting kids to thrive at reading early in life just helps create a more productive community citizen.”
Lion member Suzie Rathbun is organizing this year’s event, with Lions Club President Tonya Haddix and Kypke on hand to keep the energy high. Kypke said attendees can expect a playful touch to the evening.
“I will be dressed as the Cat in the Hat,” he said.
Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to Rathbun at 916-335-2894. Checks may be made payable to Rio Linda Lions and mailed to P.O. Box 331, Rio Linda, CA 95673.
