RIO LINDA, CA (MPG) – The Rio Linda High School girls’ basketball team entered their tilt with Destiny Christian Academy on Jan. 24 with six consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with seven. They took their matchup with ease, bagging a 71-32 win over the Destiny Christian Academy Lions. The game was just about decided by the half, when the score had already reached 37-13.

Rio Linda's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kyrri Mitchell, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 16 boards. Those 16 rebounds gave Mitchell a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of LaRay Mitchell, who posted 19 points in addition to seven assists and seven boards.

Rio Linda smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in seven consecutive contests.

Malay Walls and Aaliyah Wilcox certainly did their best on Jan. 24 to avoid the loss. Walls scored 11 points, while Wilcox put up nine points.

Rio Linda has been on a roll lately: as of press time Jan. 28, they won nine of their last 10 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 17-3 record this season. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 28.5 points per game. As for Destiny Christian Academy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 8-11.

The Lady Knights are scheduled next to host Dixon at 7 p.m. Jan. 28, after press time. Rio Linda knows how to get points on the board, the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past five games, so hopefully Dixon likes a good challenge.
